The EPA Report on Rail Noise
The EPA has completed their review of the Sydney Trains response to the rail noise Pollution Reduction Programs - you can read it HERE.
In short they have required Sydney Trains to undertake significant maintenance of the track to make it smooth and keep it that way and have set out a plan for Sydney Trains to test the ELPA lubrication system to help keep the track smooth and quite.
This is what they will do and when
- Rerail an existing section of Standard Carbon rail with a Head Hardened rail. The section to be rerailed is the Up Shore Up Rail through the Wollstonecraft Station curve. The EPA understands this work occurred during the weekend track possession of 6-7 November 2021.
- Carry out rail milling to completely remove the current corrugations in the area. This is currently scheduled for the week of 29 November – 3 December 2021.
- Carry out rail grinding following the milling to implement to correct rail profiles through the curves. This is currently scheduled for the week of 13 – 17 December 2021.
- Applicable track measurements will be carried out post each stage of works to ensure residual rail roughness and rail profiles satisfy the respective quality criteria.
- Carry out cant adjustment on the Down Shore track between Russell St and Oxley St and carry out tamping for the remainder of curves in the area to ensure design cants are in place.
- Sydney Trains will develop a tailored rail profiling strategy for the Waverton Wollstonecraft area, introducing target post roughness measures and adjusted grinding schedules.
In short, they will make the tracks smoother and try to keep them that way. That should reduce the noise significantly.
In addition, there is a report on the previous work that Sydney Trains has done to respond to the pollution reduction programs. You can read the full report HERE.
